In
Clive Barker's Crazyface, we witnessed the journey
of Tyl "Crazyface" Eulenspiegel through Medieval
Europe (a twisted history-ridden limbo, more like) plagued
by large-scale warfare involving 15th century superpowers,
England, France, Italy and Spain.
Poor, hapless Tyl, followed by a hellish guardian angel and
abandoned by his family, begins a seemingly hopeless quest
for a way to get back into his mother's graces - or perhaps
he is only trying to survive in a hostile world. Unfortunately,
he gets caught up in the workings of international spies who
are all after a mysterious little box. Naturally, what ensues
is a bloody mess... courtesy also of Tyl's long-lost sociopath
brother, Lenny.
Crazyface is a strange string of loosely connected
scenes where the script and the action move swiftly from serious
drama to Monty Pythonesque absurdity, swinging from political
satire to crude violence to superficial, simple fun and back
again. Clowns, in all possible forms, pop up everywhere, as
do men (and women) of the cloth. An anarchic sense of humour
mixes with comments on the insanity of war and the dangers
of both power-hungry politicking and religious fundamentalism.
Oh, and remember - a sweet tooth can prove fatal.
